This coming weekend, we will celebrate one of my most favourite holidays here in Canada, Thanksgiving.
The reason I love this holiday so much is it’s all about giving thanks, living from a place of gratitude, and it’s one day a year where culturally most people are in this attitude of gratitude.
We know the power of gratitude – when we are grateful in our lives and looking for the blessings, we attract even more blessings to ourselves.
It is so easy to get caught up in what’s not going right in the world, what’s not going right in our lives, what we haven’t accomplished. It is easy to get distracted by what’s not working and to forget about the many blessings in your life.
With gratitude, sometimes it feels like we have to be grateful for the BIG things in life – the big wins, the big events – but it’s equally important to be giving thanks for the small things in our lives too!
That attitude of gratitude can be brought into every area of your life, really having the potential to change your life.
I wanted to introduce you to this little book called Thanks a Thousand by AJ Jacobs.
AJ Jacobs set out to do a very simple experiment, and it was to thank every single person who was involved in him being able to go to his local coffee shop and get a cup of coffee. This took him on quite an adventure, to really acknowledge all of the hands that were involved in creating that one cup of coffee – from the manufacturers of the cup and lid of the cup, to the process of growing and roasting the beans, the farmers, producers, manufacturers, the servers in the shop, and all of the people that were involved in bringing one simple cup of coffee.
He uses this realization and goes onto talk about the power of gratitude and what it can do to really change our lives.
Today’s topic on YouTube
Here’s what I’m going to invite you to do as you sit down for your Thanksgiving meal, is to take a moment and consider all of the people, all of the hands that were involved in putting that meal in front of you. From the farmers and the truck drivers to the person who had a vision of opening the grocery store or the farmer’s market. The many, many, many hands that were involved in the production of the food, the preparation of the food, the service of the food.
As you do that, notice what it does inside of you. Typically what will happen is it will bring a new heightened level of intentionality and appreciation as you’re enjoying that food.
It will warm your heart, it will open you up, and that attitude of gratitude can be brought into every area of your life, really having the potential to change your life.
This weekend, if you’re celebrating Thanksgiving, remember that gratitude is not something we do once a year, it’s an attitude to adopt all year long.
So for those of you celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend, Happy Thanksgiving! And really adopt that giving thanks attitude every day of the year. Here is to you living a life you love.
