FIRED FOR BEING GREAT AT MY JOB – When is the right time to move on? Comfort VS Growth.

One day I got called into my boss’s office, and he said to me, “It’s time to hire your replacement, go run an ad.” And at that moment, I was feeling a little disoriented. I was feeling confused – I hadn’t quit, I quite liked this job, what was going on?

He followed it by saying, “You’ve outgrown this position, and it’s time for you to move up in the company. Take a look at what department you want to work in, and let’s get your replacement hired.” So at that moment, I was fired and promoted simultaneously, and it was a little bit shocking.

The truth was, I had outgrown that position. I probably was ready to move on. But I was also very comfortable in that position. I was good at it and left to my own devices, I probably would have stayed a little longer, or maybe a lot longer, in a job that I had outgrown.

You are not designed for mediocrity. You are designed for greatness. You're not meant to settle, to be comfortable.

Sound familiar?

Is there an area in your life where you’re very comfortable, where you are good at it, but you have outgrown it?

In the absence of somebody saying to us, “Hey, it’s time to move on,” it’s easy to settle and keep doing things that we’re comfortable with and what we’re good at. While feeling unfulfilled, and not living into our whole selves or total capacity, we fall asleep to that comfort.

Have you ever had a boss or a mentor in your life where you’re still unpacking the lessons from them? That was this boss for me. He was phenomenal. He intentionally hired people into that particular position to mentor them so that they could move on in the company. As a result of working for him, I went on to have a long career inside that organization, moving up that corporate ladder. And most importantly, it instilled within me this idea of don’t get too comfortable and don’t stay comfortable.

And because of that, it trained me to recognize within myself, “Oh, this is getting a little too comfortable, it’s time to grow.”

I don’t know very many people who had a boss like that. Who had somebody in their life who said, “Hey, you! It’s time to grow!”
