Better mindset tools (wisdom from kids)

Jeff and I have three kids, Anna, Aaron and Adele. It amazes me how unique and different they all are, and I had two of the kids, Aaron and Adele, share their insights on living a life you love.

Aaron, who is 10 and in Grade 5, loves farming. His whole life he has loved watching tractors outside our window. His goals are to become better at football and to make money to buy a GoPro.

Adele, who is 8 and in Grade 3, loves turtles! She has 16 stuffed turtles and dreams of owning a real turtle. Adele loves crafts and art, and is one of the most creative people I know! She is constantly envisioning things she wants to create and build! She says, “sometimes I see pictures in my mind, and then I change them up.” Her goal is to learn how to do trials in gymnastics and has been practicing her cartwheels to get ready!

When we can't just think more positive, we can move our bodies. We can go outside. We can play. We can connect with a friend. And that's a really powerful way to change our thoughts!

A couple things that I hear a lot from people as they get into mindset work and personal development, one of the things they say is “I wish I would have known this when I was a kid” or “I wish I would have known this when I was younger.” The other question I get asked is, “How can I help my kids or the young people in my life really understand the power of their minds and what they’re capable of?”

So I asked Aaron, when he thinks of mindsets, and the power of your mind, what first comes to mind? He answered, “words have power. You can say something to one person and that can really hurt them.” When asked about the words you think in your mind to yourself, he says, “If you think bad thoughts, bad things will happen. I feel sick in my stomach.”

So I then asked him, what are some things you can do to change your thoughts? Simply said by Aaron, “Think of other things. Keep yourself busy. Change your thoughts.” I followed up with, what could you think about? He thinks about playing hockey with his friends. He admitted it’s not always easy to change our thoughts – usually easier to get up and do something else.

I think that’s something we can all do. When we can’t just think more positive, we can move our bodies. We can go outside. We can play. We can connect with a friend. And that’s a really powerful way.

Today’s topic on YouTube

Gratitude & Failure

Almost every night, around the dinner table, we take turns saying what we’re grateful for. Aaron says, “to appreciate that like we live a happy life and just be grateful for things!” Gratitude is so important and it’s such an easy way to think about everything that’s good in our life. And when you think about what’s good, you usually feel better.

Adele and I reminisced about her learning to ride her bike. It was hard, she wanted to quit a few times, but she kept trying. Eventually she did learn how to ride that bike! She didn’t let failure or disappointment stop her from her goals, and there is such a powerful lesson for us all in that.

I asked Aaron, “To the person sitting at home right now who has a goal, a dream, a vision, but they don’t think that they can do it, what would you say to that person right now?” He responded, “Just believe in yourself and think good thoughts or it won’t happen. You can do it!”

I asked Adele, “To the person who’s feeling frustrated right now because their dreams aren’t working out the way they wanted to, what would you say to them?” She answered, “Try again and again and again until you get it how you want it!”

So what do you think about the little people in your life, or somebody who you would like to inspire?

Aaron and Adele have given us some good ideas today about the power of your thoughts, reminding us that our words have power, about the words that you speak to other people, but also just as importantly the words that you speak to yourself in your mind.

So work on changing that internal dialogue, thinking of positive things, what are you grateful for, and when that’s not enough, how can you move your body, distract yourself, go do something else.

Just know that whatever you dream is, it’s absolutely possible. You are so much more capable than you know.

Here’s to you living a life you love!
